From its original conception, this film must have started as a riot. The premise of having three macho actors take on the roles of drag queens to put together a very funny and insightful comedy of the sexes must have appeared as an impossible task. In the end, the film works because of its tight screenplay and its well defined characters. Swayze, Leguizamo, and Snipes hold nothing back, making each character real and multi dimensional. There are elements of farce, hilarity, outrageousness, and some very daring moves from its three leads. With the help of a strong supporting cast that includes Stockard Channing, as a battered woman, the film moves along quite nicely. It's a fantasy with a firm hold in reality. The leads portray three human beings that must confront what society deals them, and in the film, they manage to make some of their dreams come true. Unlike other movies dealing with special types of love, such as "Beautiful Thing" and "Big Eden" where the ending perfectly matches the rest of the fantasy, this one faces reality and offers an interesting type of compromise. It's bittersweet, expertly interweaving both the possible and impossible.Leguizamo shines as the very caliente latina persona who lives dangerously and tries to fit in, in her own special way. Swayze is the classy one, who is not allowed to forget her true nature. Wesley Snipes' role borders on caricature, but he keeps it from crossing the line between farcical and ridiculous. They all do very good work with this very risqué and difficult material. It works out.

When we went to the theater to see this, we had no idea how good it was going to be. More than just a "drag queen movie", it shows how the three drag queens in question are able to help the people in this small town. I will say that of the three cast members, Patrick Swayze looks the most like he can play a drag queen - but don't get me wrong, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo also do a great job.Anyway, this just might be the perfect kind of movie dealing with this topic. Many people have likened "To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar" to "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", but I wish to assert that "TWFTFEJN" was actually better in that it showed how they help the people in this small town. Just great. Also starring Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, Chris Penn, Melinda Dillon, Beth Grant, Alice Drummond, Robin Williams in a small role, and of course Julie Newmar (I'd never even heard of her before this).
Looking like Alexis Carrington marching into court at the end of the first season of "Dynasty", Patrick Swayze doesn't exactly travel sensibly. This rip-off of the much better "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", "Thelma and Louise" and other feminine empowerment movies hasn't aged well, even though I enjoyed it moderately the first time nearly 25 years ago. Giving the idea that all sisters of the styx are abused, accepting of gender disphoria and starved for drag sense (and that all but one specific knight in shining honor, men are racist, homophobic and molesting pigs), this is completely unrealistic in so many ways that I don't even know where to begin. It is specified from the start that the three leads are drag queens, not transgender or straight cross dressers out for kicks. Even a transgender (like Bernadette in "Priscilla") wouldn't dress up as if she was heading to the country club, and having Swayze in Joan Crawford shoulder pads while driving in the middle of nowhere is just eye rolling. Wesley Snipes, emulating RuPaul here (as the previous winner of Miss Drag New York), gets to be tough but loving, and his high pitch voiced does emulate a man's voice. Swayze overaccentuates every "s" for stereotypical gay behavior and as seen in the beginning as himself sans clothing is definitely all male.As for John Leguizamo, his stereotypical Latina ghetto female impersonator gets to display the performance art he perfected in standup. But the fact that the script demands that all three be in female attire for the entire movie just becomes truly absurd, especially when they are aided in a small backwoods town where they become Shirley Temple like Miss Fix It's for the abused Stockard Channing and other troubled women here, including the underused Blythe Danner and the adorable Alice Drummond. To top it off, there's the cop (Chris Penn) after them for a simple broken tail light that lead to Swayze knocking him out for feeling "her" up.The premise that puts him in the situation is absurd to and a complete rip-off of the Priscilla story. Their goal to make it to Hollywood for a Miss drag USA contest (dragging along Leguizamo to help her fix her lacking self esteem) has them getting lost and ending up in the middle of nowhere. Cameos by Robin Williams, Julie Newmar and assorted members of the drag community are enjoyable momentarily, but this does not seem to be a drag queen film made for the gay community. It gives the wrong impression of what drag queens are all about, and that does the gay community absolutely no favors. In that respect, it is as close to an antique as the much earlier "Boys in the Band". It attempts in its extreme feminism to be empowering but ends up being very insulting two men, both gay and straight. 2ff7e9595c
