According to the latest research, over 3 million Americans are now living with Alzheimer’s disease. Being one of these statistics is frightening, but there are now many medications and techniques available to treat this deadly disease. One of the newest medications on the market is Trazodone Hcl. Trazodone helps relieve some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's by restoring your natural sleep patterns and reducing anxiety. It also improves cognitive function that may be impaired by Alzheimer's or another dementia like drugs can cause confusion or disorientation for people with dementia. Trazodone is a potent inhibitor of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine reuptake. It selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, with minimal or no effect on norepinephrine or dopamine reuptake. In addition to its involvement in regulating mood, serotonergic neurons are believed to play a role in regulating sleep. Trazodone is commonly used to treat insomnia. Also used widely to treat depression, anxiety disorders (Panic disorder), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). It is also prescribed for the management of alcohol withdrawal, and has been shown to be effective in augmenting clomipramine’s efficacy in treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) Trazodone's mechanism of action is thought to be due to blockade of the reuptake of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a major role in mood, sleep and appetite regulation. Trazodone selectively blocks the reuptake of serotonin from nerve terminals in areas implicated in anxiety and mood regulation. In addition, it may increase levels of serotonin by preventing its breakdown by monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Trazodone is also used in the management of panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). It can also be useful in the management of alcohol withdrawal. Trazodone is included in Appendix III of the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) prohibited list. Assessing subjective sleep patterns may reveal to a physician that a patient is suffering from depression or their mood could be affected by their medication or other factors. The patient should be asked about any history of severe depression, suicidal ideation, feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, fatigue, loss interest in hobbies or work/school activities, difficulty concentrating or short-term memory problems. While Trazodone is an effective anti-depressant, it is not recommended for the treatment of panic disorder. Trazodone can interact with other medications. Medications that interfere with the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine or dopamine can increase the effects of Trazodone, whereas medications that inhibit MAOI-degrading enzymes may decrease its effect by increasing brain levels of serotonin, norepinephrine and/or dopamine. Therefore, it is important to tell your doctor if you are taking any antidepressant medication or if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) because side effects of these drugs can be intensified by Trazodone use. cfa1e77820
